ABOUT
In a small corner in Melbourne, JUHWA (中花: “middle flower”), also known as Julia Tran, spends most of her days quietly crafting intricate worlds for her curious and whimsical characters.
Deeply rooted in the stories and visuals of literature, films, cartoons, and the anime and manga that shaped her youth, Julia's growing imagination bridges old and new forms of storytelling. Her art is a patient yet willing search for a deeper understanding of the truth in and outside the home and ordinary. It is a heartfelt celebration of the hopeful child-spirit and the wise, old soul...like pure, refreshing water or a warm cup of tea.
She is also the co-founder of PANCAKE, a collective endeavoring to merge tradition and modernity through art. Influenced by Asian folk art, pop culture, and the joyous nature of play, PANCAKE takes inspiration from the 'superflat' movement that was coined by Takashi Murakami. This collective aspires to blur the lines between high and low culture, making art an engaging experience for everyone.
